Are you looking to recieve acupuncture therapy for a specific condition?
Have you been referred to acupuncture therapy by your physician?
Acupunture is now available at the Wellness Center for Fall 2006.
Appointments are available on Wednesday's from 10 AM to 4 PM.
- Intake appointment = FREE!
- Follow-up appointments = $10.00
Due to increased demand, we have increased the price of follow-up acupuncture appointments in Fall 2008 from $7 per session to $10 per session. This is still well below commercial pricing in Houston for acupuncture ($60 per session) and will help us maintain the quality of services you've come to expect. Thanks for your understanding.

What to Expect from Acupuncture at Rice
Many people are curious of acupuncture, but are afraid to try it. What is it like? What is going to happen? What should I wear? It’s only natural to have some questions! The following information will help you to enjoy your acupuncture experience:
- Try to eat on the day of your appointment but avoid large meals within one hour of your appointment. Some people experience light-headedness if they have acupuncture on an empty stomach.
- When you arrive at the Wellness Center, the acupuncturist will have you fill out some forms and will take a medical history. Please discuss any conditions you are concerned about. If you know your primary physician’s phone number and address, please bring it.
- The acupuncturist will ask you to stick out your tongue, and he/she will analyze it. The tongue often indicates how the rest of the body is functioning. For example, it can show whether you are fatigued, nauseous, or dehydrated.
- Depending on your treatment needs, the acupuncturist may ask you to remove your clothing, or maybe just shoes and socks. You will be given a robe and sheet to cover yourself. Your privacy will be protected at all times during the acupuncture session. The acupuncturists will never work any private areas.
- Then you will lay on a table or chair` with a pillow under your head and knees, and a rolled towel under each of your wrists. The acupuncturist will make you feel as comfortable as possible.
- Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and lightweight. When the needles are inserted, you may feel a slight poke, but most clients do not feel pain, and do not feel the needles once they are in.
- Once your needles are in, you will be left to relax for about 20 minutes. Envision healing energy going through your body.
- Many people fall asleep during their session, indicating that their bodies are letting go of stress and tension. Feel free to nap.
- The acupuncturist will remove your needles after about 20 minutes. You can now put your clothes and/or shoes and socks back on.
- The acupuncturist may ask for you to schedule a follow-up appointment. As with most procedures, the more often you have acupuncture done, the better your results. Call the Wellness Center for your next appointment!
